Robin Leigh was born Apr. 30, 1924, as Marjorie Leigh Pugh in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She was also known as Robin Thomas Solo. Leigh was married to W.O. Thomas Jr., Juba Solo and Jesse Victor Jackson.
The BlackMan's Art Gallery was conceived by W.O. Thomas, Jr. in 1965 after an art festival intended for Negro Art, awarded all of its prizes to white artists. With the help of Robin Leigh, the gallery opened its doors on Sept. 30, 1967, in San Francisco. At some point Thomas left the gallery and Leigh continued the gallery with Juba Solo. The BlackMan's Art Gallery was the first privately owned gallery totally devoted to black art. The gallery was open from at least 1967 to 1973.
